h/t to Public Design Festival:

Not a Vacant Lot, by The Play House, looks at the plethora of empty parking lots as an opportunity for creative public space, see more at http://phillyplayhouse.tumblr.com

“There are currently 40,000 vacant lots in the city of Philadelphia. Most people consider this a statistic of urban blight. However empty lots are often beautiful in that they are wild, a rest for the eye in an urban neighborhood.

The purpose of The Play House is to call attention to and activate neglected lots in a positive ephemeral, temporary way and see what happens…”

10 artist teams and 15 performance artists were invited to choose an empty lot in Philadelphia, activate it in some way, and create a video about it.

“These are extraordinarily difficult times requiring creative minds to solve big problems. Cities are waking up to the fact that art/ design is not only essential to a healthy community, it may even save our cities. It’s not just a commodity—at best, it’s a flexible, engaging process giving form to fresh ideas which in turn creates something new. And that creates excitement, which creates new energy, which in turn creates positive change.” - Marianne Bernstein, curator
